Digital Photo Month - Nov/Dec 2005

Digital Trip #1, November 28 - December 10, 2005 -- Featuring James Watt, this seminar is for the advanced digital photographer wishing to learn advanced techniques. It is targeted at those who already own there own digital systems.

Digital Trip #2, December 11 - 23, 2005 -- DEMO gear and technical advise will be provided and sponsored by Berkley White of Backscatter www.Backscatter.com, and Dan Baldocchi of Light & Motion www.uwimaging.com.

James Watt is one of the most successful underwater photographers in the world today. In his 25-year career he has been published in over 800 magazines and books worldwide. His company "OceanStock.com" is one of the leading marine stock photo resources. Jim has been the leader in the digital underwater revolution since the beginning and is considered the digital "Guru" that other experts in underwater photography turn to for advice. He developed many of the standard techniques for digital underwater imaging and has the largest and most diverse underwater digital collection in the world. Jim has been lecturing on digital photography in many locations this year and is a popular digital presenter. Many major photo manufacturers utilize Jim's services as a Beta tester for new products for the underwater photographer.

Objective of the seminar:

• To instruct the students in advanced digital imagery.
• To push the envelope on their knowledge and skills.
• To have them leave the course with an advanced knowledge of digital technique.

• Formal instruction will be given every other evening on board with less formal critique and mini lectures on the alternate evenings.
• Jim will be available to give hands on advice at any time and image reviews every evening.
• Light and Motion and Backscatter will provide (during their two trips) digital demo systems for guests to use throughout the week. Their goal will be to outfit each guest with their own system, however, it will depend on the boat load and supply demo equipment. Everyone will be able to shoot at least once per day.
• The voyage will begin with an equipment seminar to get everyone familiar with the gear.
• Each night they will have image shows and progressively work through shooting techniques.
• At the end of each leg there will be a fun image contest with prizes such as t-shirts, hats, etc.

• Introduction to Digital - Overview of the state of digital photography, what digital can do and can't do, equipment available today, software and hardware choices. Camera set up and use underwater. Lighting and underwater review.
• Software basics - Getting a basic handle on Photoshop, color calibration., etc.
• Software Advanced - Photoshop advanced techniques. Getting better than film quality from digital, Image data basing and retrieval, etc.
• Presentation - Software, digital transmission, storage and the web. Using software for stunning visual presentations for large groups or the web. Storage and transmittal of images.
• Brave New Worlds - The future and advanced imaging. What the future holds.
• Please note that lectures may be modified for content as required.

• Required - Laptop computer equipped with Adobe Photoshop (or equivalent).
• Helpful but not required - Extensis Portfolio ( or other image data base software), Quick Time, SI (stair interpolation), Live Slide Show, Pro Jpeg, Power point.
